fire safety week

October isn’t just about pumpkins, costumes, and cooler weather.  It is also Fire Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about fire safety and helping communities stay prepared.  Every year, Fire Prevention Week also takes place during October.  This week is all about remembering the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 which was a disaster that changed how we think about fire safety forever.

The Great Chicago Fire started on October 8th, 1871, and burned through the city for two days.  Fueled by strong winds and dry conditions, it destroyed more than three square miles of Chicago, leaving over 100,000 people homeless and claiming hundreds of lives.  In the aftermath, city officials and fire departments across the country began emphasizing fire prevention, preparedness, and public education.  They recognized that knowledge and planning are some of the best defenses against tragedy.

To honor the lessons learned from that event, Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).  It remains the longest-running public health observance in the United States and continues to educate families about fire risks, safety tips, and emergency planning.  Over time, the observance expanded not Fire Prevention Month, giving fire departments, schools, and communities a full month to share resources and engage with the public.

Why Fire Safety Education Matters

While modern infostructure is safer than they were in 1871, fires still happen every day and they happen fast.  According to the NFPA, you may have as little as two minutes to safely escape a home fire once the alarm sounds.  That is why knowing what to do before an emergency makes all the difference.

Fire safety education is not just for kids.  Everyone, from preschoolers to adults, benefit from understanding how to prevent fires, recognize hazards, and react calmly in an emergency.  Teaching basic skills such as how to test a smoke alarm, make an escape plan, or stop, drop, and roll, can save lives.

For children, hands-on learning makes those lessons stick.  When kids can physically practice crawling under smoke or identifying hazards in a simulated environment, the experience becomes memorable.  That is where the Inflatable Fire Education House comes in.

Bringing Fire Safety to Life with the Inflatable Fire Education House

Our Inflatable Fire Education House is a portable, interactive tool designed to make fire safety education engaging and effective.  Instead of just hearing about what to do during a fire, participants can walk through a simulated home and experience it for themselves.  Inside, they can identify potential hazards in various rooms, learn how to plan escape routes, and practice crawling low under smoke to safely escape.
